The article focuses on the devotion of American museums to the art of the Western U.S. It primarily explores the rise of museums that was committed to the study and exhibition of western American art. It also delves into the museums' collection and supplementation of western art, with the consideration on the place of western art in American cultural history. Among these museums include the Whitney Gallery of Western Art in Wyoming and the Denver Art Museum in Colorado.

Painter and writer. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Catlin studied law but abandoned that career to paint. With little formal training, he developed skill as a portrait painter, later becoming the first artist of any importance to document the culture of the Indians in pictorial terms. His introduction to the subject of his lifelong endeavor is said to have occurred when a group of western chieftains paid a visit to Charles Willson Peale’s museum of natural history in Philadelphia in the 1820s.
