Also called jurisprudence (from the Latin juris prudentia, i.e. “knowledge of the law” or “wisdom concerning the law”), the philosophy of law is the study of the concepts and principles involved in a legal system or, in general jurisprudence (sometimes also called nomology – from the Greek nomos, i.e. “law,” and “logos,” i.e. “discourse” or “theory”), in all legal systems, as well as the relation between law and morality.

The science or knowledge of law; thus, in its widest sense, the study of the legal doctrines, rules, and principles of any legal system. More commonly, however, the term designates the study not of the actual laws of particular legal systems, but of the general concepts and principles that underlie a legal system or that are common to all such systems (general jurisprudence).
