The early history of the Mormons, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was largely a story of migration from New York to Ohio, west to Missouri, and back again to Nauvoo, Illinois. There they encountered resentment from their neighbors because of clannishness, economic success, and political influence, and violence broke out. Convinced that they could not be assured protection within the United States, the Mormons resolved to move again.
