Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month

Since 1990, Congress has authorized an annual presidential proclamation that designates November as National American Indian Heritage Month to encourage all people to learn about the contributions and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the North American continent.

Tribes Native to Missouri

The original native people of Missouri included the following.  Most were forced to leave Missouri during the Indian Removals of the 1800s.
The State Historical Society of Missouri provides a guide related to Native Americans in Missouri.

Other tribes later passed through Missouri in the Indian Removals of the 1800s. These included the Cherokee, Delaware, Kickapoo, Sac and Fox, and Shawnee.
