Primary Sources - Resource Guide

The Missouri Digital Heritage Initiative is a collaborative effort that dramatically expands the amount of information available online about Missouri’s past. In 2007, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan proposed this landmark initiative to further Missourians’ access to information about the history of our state and local communities.

The State Historical Society of Missouri is pleased to present a growing collection of digitized historic newspapers. These images are freely available to the public and are keyword-searchable.

The Daniel Boone Regional Library Community History Archive showcases unique local photographs and documents that help tell the story of Mid-Missouri’s past. This growing collection represents aspects of our towns, institutions, neighborhoods and people that might never see a wider audience without digitization.

Many of these are for in-library use only at Daniel Boone Regional Library.

Broad variety of archival material, chiefly from the U.S. and Europe, reproduced on microfilm or microfiche, as well as rare books.

Includes photographs of Kansas City history, music, and culture.

The materials in our repository are divided into text and image collections. Books and other printed materials which consist mostly of words can be found in the text collections; image collections consist primarily of images, such as post cards, newspaper images, and picture books.

The digital collections of the Library of Congress contain a wide variety of material associated with Booker T. Washington. Washington was born in Missouri.

University of Missouri-Columbia
The Museum of Art and Archaeology contains objects from a wide range of cultures. The collection of Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern art works and artifacts is especially strong, and there are significant holdings from ancient Egypt and Byzantium. In addition, the Museum has important collections in European and American art from the fifteenth century to the present, including a Samuel H. Kress Study Collection of European paintings. Asian, African, Ancient Americas, and Oceanic cultures are also well represented.

The Society holds one of the largest collection of paintings by George Caleb Bingham, including, Order No. 11. The Thomas Hart Benton Collection contains the Year of Peril series, lithographs and other works. Many other Missouri artists, both past and present, are well represented in the Society's holdings.
