The exhibition covers Black and Asian history in Britain from 1500 to 1850.

For over a century, discussion about the social impact of industrialization in Britain was dominated by the so-called “standard of living debate”. This was a dispute between “optimists” who believed that industrialization had improved life for the majority of working Britons, and “pessimists” who believed that it had made their condition worse.

The phrase youth culture was a product of the twentieth-century realization that young people had acquired enough power in the society to create autonomous cultures distinct from and often resistant to adult cultures.

Meera Syal, as a post-colonial writer, who shares the experience of growing up and living in an environment with a dominant English language and culture which were not hers, seems comfortable and confident with her dual identity. In the context of Syal's Anita and Me, Meena, the protagonist, is becoming a hybridized girl, by abrogation and appropriation of elements of the dominant English culture, notably the English language and culture and through particular attitudes which relegate her from marginal/subordinate positions to those reached from cross-fertilization
